NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Ganita Prakash Chapter 3 — Figure it Out (Page 59)#
The Roman landmark numbers are:
| I | V | X | L | C | D | M |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 10 | 50 | 100 | 500 | 1000 |
A number is split into landmark numbers, taking as many of the largest as possible first. A smaller symbol written before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
1. Represent the following numbers in the Roman system. (i) 1222 (ii) 2999 (iii) 302 (iv) 715 #
(i) 1222
$1222 = 1000 + 100 + 100 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1$
∴ 1222 = MCCXXII
(ii) 2999
$2999 = 1000 + 1000 + 900 + 90 + 9$
Here 900 is CM (100 before 1000), 90 is XC (10 before 100) and 9 is IX (1 before 10).
∴ 2999 = MMCMXCIX
(iii) 302
$302 = 100 + 100 + 100 + 1 + 1$
∴ 302 = CCCII
(iv) 715
$715 = 500 + 100 + 100 + 10 + 5$
∴ 715 = DCCXV
