What you will learn#
- A number system is a fixed sequence of objects, names or symbols used for counting.
- Landmark numbers (like I, V, X, L, C, D, M) make large numbers shorter to write.
- In a base-n system the landmark numbers are $1, n, n^2, n^3, \ldots$
- In a place value system the position of a symbol decides its value, and 0 marks an empty place.
Key formulas and results#
- Base-10: $375 = 3 \times 10^2 + 7 \times 10 + 5$
- Base-5: $143 = 1 \times 5^3 + 0 \times 5^2 + 3 \times 5 + 3$
- Base-60 (Mesopotamian): $7530 = 2 \times 60^2 + 5 \times 60 + 30$
